66th Annual Primetime Emmys Prove That America Has Been Sherlocked
Hollywood, California-August 25, 2014- held the 66th Annual Primetime Emmys. Critics all across the board from Hollywood Reporter, Deadline Hollywood, Variety, and even Buzzfeed all anticipated a grand sweep from Breaking Bad and Modern Family (since they have been consistent reigning champions these past years) and had predicted that Netflix’s original series; “Orange is the New Black” and “House of Cards” along with HBO’s impressive 19 nomination list would take home most the gold for “Game of Thrones” but this was not the case. And America was shellshocked or more like Sherlocked.
Sherlock has been nominated at the Emmys since it’s humble beginnings in 2010, but this is the first time the show has won an Emmy. Sherlock outwitted critically acclaimed American competition such as “Fargo”, “True Detective” and “The Normal Heart” winning seven total Emmys this year for miniseries/movie “His Last Vow” which is the most dramatic episode in the series yet.
So what does this mean for the show in America now that it’s bested the creme of the crop in American television?
Steven Moffat was very surprised by the win for “Best Writing for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Dramatic Special” and had a couple of choice (and perhaps revealing) things to say:
“I didn’t think we’d win anything, genuinely…very shocked and surprised.”
“We’re delighted that we’ve made it here and hopefully get more people watching”
In regards to the new upcoming and HIGHLY anticipated season 4 of Sherlock, the Moff had this to say:
“We have a plan to top it, and I do think our plan is devastating. We practically reduced our cast to tears by revealing the plan [and we are] are excited than we’ve ever been”
You can read more about what Moffat had to say on Variety here.
BAFTA has yet to acknowledge Benedict Cumberbatch as best actor in a series, but have given award(s) to Martin Freeman and
Andrew Scott. Though this does not mean that the shows writing and production team are completely bone dry in native England when it comes to awards. What’s the deal with that England? What does it mean when America has given one of it’s most prestigious awards to a show that has much more fan base and credibility in England? Does it perhaps mean that America and her critics have finally opened their eyes to the brilliant writing, production, post-production and value that is Sherlock? Or at least that Benedict Cumberbatch has now officially (unofficially) become America’s Sweetheart?
We at According to Benedict congratulate cast and crew and many happy returns for their triumphant turn out across the pond and oh how we all wish that Martin and Benedict had picked another time to skip the Emmys this year.
(Martin is currently on the last leg of RichardIII and Benedict is currently filming)
And thankfully it won’t long until we see the pair in action at an awards ceremony (hopefully) as Martin and Benedict both star in “the Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” and Benedict’s possible Oscar nomination for his role as Alan Turing in “Imitation Game”.
LIST OF WINS:
Benedict Cumberbatch, for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Movie
Martin Freeman, for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie
Steven Moffat, for Best Writing for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Dramatic Special
Best Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie — for Neville Kidd
Best Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie, Or Dramatic Special — for David Arnold and Michael Price
Best Single-Camera Editing for a Miniseries or Movie — for Yan Miles
Best Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special — for Doug Sinclair, Stuart McCowan, Jon Joyce, Paul McFadden, William Everett, and Sue Harding
The closest thing we’ll get to an acceptance speech comes from the two men just two years ago when Sherlock was nominated (and how humble they are just to be invited to the ceremony!)
If you missed it watch Benedict Cumberbatch be presented by Woody Harrleson and Matthew Mcconaughey below
