Wreckers (2011)
Currently available on United States Netflix. Wreckers, an independent drama, came only to United Kingdom cinemas in Winter 2011. A resilient piece that rides the waves of drama, lies, deception and the willingness to keep living.
David (Benedict Cumberbatch) seems the perfect husband on the surface. David is a calm creature, loving, attentive, and is currently employed as a college professor in the next town over. His wife, Dawn (Claire Foy), is more internal and reserved by nature, but nonetheless an attentive wife with a slight detached lingering sadness that follows her like a cloud.
Soon after they move into a house in David’s old childhood town his brother, Nick (Shaun Evans), comes home from the army and forces himself into the couple’s new home.
As Nick infiltrates the home it has a profound effect on David which in turn reveals secrets about the seemingly happy couple. Dark secrets, lies, and betrayal weigh heavily on the marriage and no one is able to see a decent way out.
Wreckers is a beautifully constructed piece of work brought to life by its principal actors since so much is based on characters and past events not seen on camera. Benedict Cumberbatch, who is known for playing sleuth detective Sherlock Holmes, plays a man with a abusive past trying to pass off being ordinary and does so properly. Claire Foy, known for her parts in other drama films, breathes life into a wife who feels like she has been thoroughly betrayed and can find no other way out of the life she has committed herself to for better or for worse.
Wreckers is an art house film that will leave viewers trapped in a corner wondering what will happen until the very end.
